Head Coach Vince Maiocco

Vince Maiocco became the Cougars Baseball head coach in 2005 prior to being an assistant from 2001 to 2004. In his time as the Cougars head coach he has been instrumental in attaining some significant accomplishments; most recently the Victory Custom Athletic Coach of the Year award in 2016 and most notably the first back-to-back-to-back winning seasons at Taft College since the 1985-87 seasons.

The Cougars enjoyed their first winning season in 2009 with a 24-19-1 record, the first winning season since 1994.  In 2010 the team finished with a 22-14 record, in 2011 the Cougars had an identical 22-14 record. Then in 2015 the team had a 21-15 record. The Cougars finished both the 2011 and 2015 seasons ranked NorCal’s #17 best team.

Coach Maiocco had extensive head coaching experience before coming to Taft College as an assistant coach in 2001 for long time head coach and 2007 CCCBCA Hall of Fame Inductee, Tony Thompson. He was the head coach at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California from 1992-1998. Coach Maiocco was the head coach for the Humboldt Crabs summer collegiate baseball club from 1993-1995 in Arcata, California.

Maiocco has extensive high school coaching experience as well. From 1984-1986 he coached at his high alma mater, Corning High School and during the 1987 season he coached at Orland High School.

Maiocco's wife Tami is a Physical Education Teacher, Girls Golf Coach and Boys Tennis Coach at Bakersfield High School. They have two daughters; Mary and Laurynn.

Assistant Coach Michael Hayes

Michael Hayes begins his 3rd season at Taft as an assistant coach. He graduated from Spanish Fork High School in Utah in 2008. Spanish Fork is one of the best high school baseball programs in the west. He entered Taft College in fall 2008 playing under head coach Vince Maiocco during the 2009-2010 seasons, making him a member of the first back to back winning seasons at Taft College since the late 1980’s. After receiving his AA from Taft College, he proceeded to go on his Latter Day Saint’s Mission and spent two years in rural Mexico. He and his wife Kylee are currently living in Taft, and both plan to enter the Taft College Dental Hygiene program next year. His coaching responsibilities will be helping coach the infielders, outfielders and assist with hitting instruction. He is a welcomed addition to the Cougar coaching staff.

Coach DeFreece comes to Taft College after a six year stint as the infield and hitting coach at Shasta College in Northern California.  Chris graduated from Red Bluff High chool in 1984 and went on to Sacramento State University where he played both football and baseball. As a catcher and infielder at Sacramento State, Chris was a member of the Hornet baseball team that accomplished a NCAA D2 Western Regional Championship and twice qualified for the D2 College World Series in Montgomery, Alabama. At Taft College, Chris will work with the infielders, catchers and hitters.  Chris brings a wealth of knowledge about the game from both a player and coaching perspective.
