Kanoe Bandy has just completed her 23rd season here at Taft College. She began her career at Taft College in 1987 and has been there ever since with the exceptions of Taft High School in the fall of 1994 and at Bakersfield College in the fall of 1995. While at Bakersfield College, Kanoe Bandy maintained the winning tradition by finishing as the Co Champions of the Western State Conference. Since 1996 she has also served as the Athletic Director at Taft College. Kanoe is a Taft College representative on the Central Valley Conference Board of Directors. She also holds the position of Secretary and Treasurer to the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association.
Kanoe has had the honor of being named the Central Valley Conference Coach of the Year 7 times and NorCal Regional Coach of the Year for 3 consecutive years in 2003, 2004, and 2005. In 2005 Kanoe was honored as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northern Regional Coach of the Year. Kanoe Bandy was also honored at the Awards Banquet at the AVCA Convention in Sacramento in 2007 for her 300th AVCA win. At this time, Kanoe Bandy has 407 career wins.
The volleyball team, under the direction of Bandy, has posted an overall record of 211 wins and 86 losses in 3 of 5 game matches at Taft College since 1996. During this period of time, the volleyball team has won 5 conference championships. In 2004, the team finished 4th in the State of California. Another of the teams accomplishments was being awarded the 2001 Scholar Team Award by the Commission on Athletics while also winning the Central Valley Conference Championship.
Kanoe’s husband Don is also from the teaching and coaching ranks. He is a former football coach. He spent 10 years at the high school level before coming here to Taft College in 1979, during our football heyday. He also coached softball for 20 years, retiring from coaching in 2006. He continues to teach History and Health Education at Taft College. Together, we spend our free time following our son, Stewart who is a freshman at Humboldt State participating in football.
Assistant Coach Lisa Borrecco
Lisa Borrecco has been an assistant coach for 5 years, beginning her time in 2005. Lisa graduated from Taft High School in 1997. She played volleyball for Taft College as a defensive specialist in 1997 and 1998 where her team had an overall record of 22-10 during the two seasons. Lisa went on to California State University, Bakersfield to complete her degree and teaching credential in English. Lisa returned to Taft High School to teach English. She brings great volleyball knowledge and experience to the team.
Assistant Coach Tim Maui
Malieo “Tim” Maui has been an assistant coach for the past 4 years beginning in the season of 2006. Tim understands hard work and is determined to share his work ethic with the team. Tim graduated from Taft High School in 1997. Not really having a direction in his life, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Tim began his service for our Country on February 12, 2002. He was stationed on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Constellation, which was the first ship to launch their missiles to begin the war in Iraq. When Tim completed his service in the Navy in 2006, he entered the Corrections Program at WESTEC. He is dedicated to our volleyball program, choosing to work nights in order to be available for our practices and games in the afternoons.
Tim was married in October of 2009 to his love of 10 years, Mahea Pearl.
